Meet Our OB/GYN & Midwifery Providers

Ellen M. Appleton, MSN, CNM

Ellen Appleton, MSN, CNM, earned her Bachelor’s degree, with honors, from William Paterson University in 2012. After working at Shore Medical Center and Inspira Medical Center-Vineland as a labor and delivery nurse for six years, Ellen continued her education at Frontier Nursing University. There she obtained both a Master's of Science in Nursing and a post-graduate certificate as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. She currently practices at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital as a certified nurse midwife, and she participates in several national organizations, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Nurse Practitioners for Women’s Health.

Ellen prides herself on bringing evidence-based, quality, individualized care to the community, as well as incorporating women in their own care. Supporting women before, during, and after their pregnancy is a main focus of her efforts. She also provides gynecological services from menstruation to menopause, which includes, but is not limited to: birth control counseling/prescription, preconception care, STD testing/counseling, and postmenopausal care.

Victoria Asturrizaga, MSN, CNM

Victoria (Vicki) Asturrizaga, MSN, CNM, earned her BSN from Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences and her MSN from Frontier Nursing University. With more than 20 years’ experience, Vicki began practicing as a med-surg nurse, and then worked as a labor & delivery nurse while pursuing her passion of midwifery. Vicki believes in providing education, support, and encouragement for women to make their own decisions regarding healthcare. She supports their right to choose their own childbirth experience, but carries a special interest in group prenatal care, as well as unmedicated childbirth. Vicki also provides routine and focused gynecologic care from adolescence through menopause. She is an avid member of the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN).   

Jennifer Barraclough, CNM

Jennifer R. Barraclough, MS, CNM, earned her Master of Science degree in Midwifery at Thomas Jefferson University, where she provided adolescents through menopausal women with gynecologic care and handled low- to high-risk pregnancies. Jennifer has experience as both a midwife and clinical instructor for midwifery and medical students. She attends births at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital. Jennifer also has pediatric, mother-baby, NICU step-down, and labor & delivery experience. She is passionate about safely guiding her pregnant patients and their families to have the birth they envision, as well as providing quality reproductive healthcare throughout a person’s lifespan.  

Kenneth Covone, DO, FACOOG, Chief of OB/GYN

Dr. Kenneth Covone specializes in minimally invasive “robotic” surgery using the new da Vinci® HD Surgical System. He is also certified in Essure® hysteroscopic tubal occlusion procedures for sterilization and Nexplanon® (birth control device) insertion. Our patients benefit from his expertise in the most technologically advanced gynecological procedures. Affiliated with Jefferson OB/GYN Associates since 2007, Dr. Covone is a 2003 graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, and a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Ursinus College, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1997. Dr. Covone completed his OB/GYN residency at then-Kennedy University Hospital, where he was Chief Resident during 2006-2007. A South Jersey native, Dr. Covone is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Jessica Hayes, MSN, CNM

Jessica (Jess) Hayes, MSN, CNM, earned her BSN in Nursing from LaSalle University and began her career as a labor & delivery nurse at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She obtained her MSN in Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University and completed her clinical rotation with the midwives at Pennsylvania Hospital. Jess then spent 4 years in private practice specializing in unmedicated, physiologic birth in both hospitals and birth centers in Northern NJ, before joining the Jefferson OBGYN team. Jess provides holistic, comprehensive care to women across their reproductive lifespan. Jess is also interested in breastfeeding, treating sexual dysfunction, and incorporating complimentary modalities into medical management. Jess believes that all patients should be active participants in their healthcare decision making, and that birth is normal.

Maureen Hughes-Brown, APN

Maureen Hughes-Brown, APN, board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, earned her BSN from Western Governors University and her MSN from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. She is a certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Inpatient Obstetrical Nurse. During her Drexel studies, she was awarded a scholarship from Independence Blue Cross for "Nurses for Tomorrow" and an award through the Tears Foundation -- a national bereavement service for perinatal loss. Maureen has worked for Jefferson Health - New Jersey for almost 30 years, previously serving as a charge nurse on Telemetry and Labor and Delivery, and, now, for the Jefferson Health Medical Group as a nurse practitioner. Maureen has passionately cared for and advocated for women of all ages throughout her career. Maureen believes it is an honor and privilege to care for women every day; it is her personal goal to ensure women feel comfortable when seeking obstetrical and gynecological care, so that they continue their visits and uphold their health. She is currently an avid member of the Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH) association and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN).

Jennifer Hummel, DO, FACOOG, Medical Director

Dr. Jennifer Hummel is a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - School of Osteopathic Medicine. She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and has spent her career caring for the community where she grew up. In practice for more than seven years, Dr. Hummel provides personalized health care and wellness services to women in all stages of life. Her philosophy toward women’s health is to treat the whole woman. This holistic approach includes physical care, encompassing the entire range of gynecological and obstetrical services, to mental and emotional support throughout a woman’s life, from early age through menopause. With a strong belief that hers is the best job in the world, Dr. Hummel approaches all women as individuals with their own story. She tries to bring comfort and compassion to the delicate, personal scenario that all women experience when going to a gynecologist, and loves the continuity of seeing patients year after year, watching the children she helps bring into the world grow up. “I feel honored that these women allow me the privilege of caring for them and their unborn children.”

Kelly Park, DO

Kelly Park, DO, is a graduate of the University of California Berkeley, the Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the RowanSOM OB/GYN residency, and she has recently joined Jefferson Health – New Jersey. During her residency, Park has served as a Chief Resident. She also has experience volunteering at local, free clinics and serving as a mental health assistant in underserved communities. She has a special interest in family planning, but enjoys all aspects of gynecology and obstetrics.  

Park is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists; American Congress of Obstetrician and Gynecologists; American Osteopathic Association; and American Medical Association.

Jessica Pescatore, DO, FACOG

Jessica Pescatore, DO, FACOG, is an attending OB/GYN with Jefferson Health - New Jersey. She graduated from Ursinus College and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine before pursuing her residency at Abington Jefferson Health, where she served as Administrative Chief Resident. Dr. Pescatore has a passion for caring for the whole obstetric patient, from preconception, through postpartum, as well as providing comprehensive family planning services.

Dr. Pescatore is an avid marathoner, beginning the hobby with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training, while completing her own treatment for lymphoma just prior to medical school. A mother of two small girls (Eloise and Margaret) and one large dog (Beatrice), she can often be found logging long miles behind a double running stroller. Dr. Pescatore’s husband is also a physician (Public Health/Emergency Medicine) and they’ve collaborated together on several educational podcasts.

Meredith S. Stein, CNM

Meredith S. Stein, CNM, graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. After working as a Labor and Delivery nurse, she attended The University of Pennsylvania for her master's degree. She is dually certified as both a Nurse Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. Meredith provides in office care to pregnant patients, as well as routine gynecological care. She attends births at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital. 

Deborah White, DO, MPH, FACOOG

Dr. Deborah White is a 2009 graduate of the University Of New England College Of Osteopathic Medicine and holds a master’s degree in Public Health from the George Washington University. A 2002 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dr. White’s background includes serving as a Research Assistant in the Division of Viral Pathogenics at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Comparative Medicine at MIT. She also undertook an internship at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University. Dr. White’s community and volunteerism includes serving at a medical clinic in Maine, and at a women’s shelter in Boston. Board-certified, she is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She has a special interest in cerclage placement (a procedure used to prevent pre-term delivery).

Katherine Wormser, MSN, CNM, WHNP-BC

Katherine (Kate) Wormser, MSN, CNM, WHNP-BC started her training at Boston College, earning her BSN in nursing. She then worked as a registered nurse on a tertiary-level labor & delivery floor, before returning to school to earn her Master of Science in Midwifery at the University of Pennsylvania. She is dually board certified in midwifery and women’s health nurse practitioner. Kate provides both full scope midwifery care in the inpatient and outpatient settings, including GYN annual visits; routine prenatal care; contraception counseling; STI (sexually transmitted infection) counseling and testing; fertility counseling; outpatient procedures including IUD and Nexplanon insertion and removal; and endometrial and vulvar biopsies. Kate’s two favorite parts of her job are delivering babies and empowering patients to be an active participant in their healthcare. Kate’s care philosophy is that everyone deserves an opportunity to be listened to and believed when advocating for their health.

Michelle Hurwitz, LCSW

Michelle Hurwitz, LCSW, behavioral health consultant, earned her Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers University. She holds certifications in Sexual Trauma Crisis; Domestic Violence Response; and Clinical Social Work Supervision. Prior to joining Jefferson Health - New Jersey, she spent over a decade providing comprehensive social work services in outpatient settings, from short-term treatment of behavioral health disorders to coordinating needs of patients and their families with insurance providers and other community agencies.
