Message from the Program Director
On behalf of all of us in the program, I thank you for your interest in our Emergency Medicine Residency Program. And let me say at the onset that whatever program you choose — I deeply admire and respect that you have chosen service to others as your life’s work.
For close to three decades, Jefferson Health - New Jersey (formerly Kennedy University Hospital System) and Rowan - SOM (formerly UMDNJ - SOM) have trained generations of emergency medicine physicians that deliver safe, high quality, evidence-based care to culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse patient populations. Our 200 graduates have successfully practiced in every clinical environment -- critical access centers, community hospitals, academic centers, and tertiary medical institutions -- many of whom became leaders later in their practicing institutions.
Our main goal is to provide residents all the tools necessary for success on their first day as an attending and thereafter. We also provide them with guidance to be a leader in their medical community. We attribute our success to the family-oriented, non-competitive learning environment that we foster. We cultivate a longitudinal mentorship between the attending physicians and residents that provide not only a nurturing element to grow the residents’ clinical education, but also create a lifelong bond that is individually tailored to the residents’ needs. We have a very collegial working relationship with the ED nurses and ancillary staff who have a long history working with residents, medical, nursing, and PA students.
30 years ago, the seed of emergency medicine residency excellence in South Jersey was started by our late and beloved Program Director, Dr. Anthony Dipasquale. That seed has now spread and has grown into trees that span the 4 corners of the United States. As a graduate of the program, I am wholeheartedly committed to continually making this residency the best it can be. My faculty and I believe that through medical education, one’s contribution to society will be infinite through the hands of the residents that we graduate.
Our graduates are a collage of the people that trained them. This collage has grown throughout the years and has become a tapestry of our past, present, and future. The extensive network of our alumni has helped our residents seeking fellowships and employment.
With the pillars of great institutions like Jefferson Health NJ and Rowan SOM, our future is brighter than ever. We constantly reflect, assess and make changes to our curriculum to fill the educational needs of our residents. Our future lies on the implementation of our resident mentorship program, robust incorporation of SIM lab, longitudinal ultrasound training, integrated focus on critical care all while we continue to maintain our osteopathic heritage.
Our residency may be located in southern New Jersey but to our residents, both past and present, residency is not a physical location…it is a feeling of HOME.
So welcome to our home! And we hope you stay awhile.
