Valentines that Volunteer Together Stay Together

At Jefferson Health in New Jersey, Valentines that volunteer together, stay together!

Norma and Stephen Marshall, residents of Turnersville, started volunteering at Jefferson Stratford Hospital in 2010, just a few years after they retired.

Volunteering wasn’t previously on their mind, until Norma had an appointment at the hospital, and was escorted to the proper department by a volunteer/patient ambassador. They started talking, and Stephen and Norma realized that a role like that would be a perfect fit for them!

Nearly every Thursday morning, for 10 years, they’ve spent time volunteering at the hospital – Norma in Same Day Surgery, and Stephen in Admissions. Norma helps put together patient information packers, while Stephen shows patients where to go, similar to the friendly face that encouraged him to start in the first place.

“Even though we travel a lot and spend time with friends and family, this is a different kind of social interaction,” said Norma. “It’s been incredibly fulfilling to give back to the community and help the hospital staff take care of patients.”

“Our volunteers are truly special individuals with big hearts,” said Christine Bianchi, Assistant to the Corporate Manager of Volunteer Services. “The compassion, patience, and kindness they show daily to our patients and their families is priceless. They are a huge asset to our Jefferson family!”

Norma mentioned how wonderful it is to share the experience, and spread love and joy to the patients, with someone she loves – her husband.
