New Mom Builds Trusting Relationship with Healthcare Providers at Jefferson Health New Jersey

May 7, 2019

South Jersey resident Crystal Menschner, was about to become a first-time mom at age 37. Although she was considered a high-risk pregnancy, everything was going smoothly – Crystal didn’t even experience a bout of morning sickness.

Crystal very much wanted a personal relationship with her care provider – someone who would spend time with her and offer guidance and suggestions while she was expecting, and beyond.

Her expectations were fulfilled through the collaborative efforts of Jefferson Health Certified Nurse Midwife Susie Guzman, CNM, APN-C -- who cared for Crystal during her first two trimesters – and  OB/GYN Jennifer Hummel, who was  Crystal’s care provider during the last trimester, and who delivered her baby.

“Susie answered all of our questions and provided solid direction on how to take care of myself throughout my pregnancy,” Crystal recalled, adding that she “advised not to rely on the internet, but to come to her with questions and concerns.”  At 37, Crystal was classified as Advanced Maternal Age (AMA). Even though 10% of new mothers deliver babies at age 35 or older, AMA carries an increase in certain risk categories.

“Dr. Hummel, who took over my care in her Mullica Hill office, was very easygoing and provided us with the same informed, compassionate care,” Crystal recalled.

The Menschners enrolled in the 4-part weeknight childbirth education class – free for moms delivering at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital – and loved it: “At first, we thought why is it so long, but by the last class we said to ourselves ‘Wait … it’s not long enough! We have more questions.’”

Deborah Cicero, BSN, RNC, CCE, was not only the couple’s Childbirth Class Instructor, but also led their tour of the Jefferson Washington Township Hospital’s Labor & Delivery, Mother-Baby, and NICU Units. As a Mother-Baby Unit nurse, Deb became a welcoming, familiar face to the Menschners as she also later provided postpartum care for Crystal and her newborn son, Sebastian, following his complication-free birth in early February.

“All of the nurses I met along the way were responsive to my needs and provided me with a great amount of comfort and support,” Crystal recalls. Her advice to other moms-to-be: “Don’t plan too much. Roll with it and trust your doctors and nurses.”

“We had an awesome experience and great trust and confidence in our team of providers,” she says.
