Meet Jennifer Craig – The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center’s New Clinical Research Nurse
Jennifer L. Craig, BSN, RN, recently joined the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center – Washington Township as a Clinical Research Nurse. A graduate of Drexel University College of Medicine, she’s spent the past 10 years in a variety of clinical settings, most recently Maternal-Fetal Medicine research.
New to the specialty of cancer, we sat down with Jennifer to learn what her role entails and what she’s most excited about.
What is the role of a clinical research nurse?
We work closely with investigators to design, set up, and execute clinical trials. This involves working one-on-one with patients to educate them about their options and see if they’re interested in enrolling. If they participate, we follow up with them through the entire course of their treatment to see how they’re doing and if there have been any notable outcomes.
What inspired you to work in clinical trials?
I was working in Labor & Delivery when the opportunity arose to switch gears into research. It excited me because I could still be hands-on, plus I could be a part of improving the standard of care for future patients.
One of my most fulfilling trials so far had to do with whether it was more beneficial for a first-time mom to go into labor on her own or be induced at 39 weeks; the trial supported the latter, and it felt amazing to know that we were able to provide new information to women to give them and their baby a safe and healthy experience.
What is your patient care goal?
To make sure my patients are fully aware of all their options and emphasize the benefits of clinical trials. There are so many trials that have great potential to help others; so, even if you’re doing it for your own health, you’re also helping us advance treatments, which is an incredibly selfless act.
What excites you most about joining Jefferson?
These state-of-the-art trials are now much more accessible to people in South Jersey; there’s no stressful commute. I’m happy to be part of a team that provides this opportunity for people who need it.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Spend time with my husband and two kids, who are my whole world, and spin on my exercise bike for much-needed stress relief!
