Laughter is the Best Medicine: How Spending Time with Those in Need Can Make a World of Difference
Have you heard the saying, “laughter is the best medicine?” When it comes to residents of the Jefferson Health Care Center – a long-term nursing facility in Washington Township - their happiness means everything to the Center’s employees.
Keeping the residents smiling is one of McKayla Earley’s main goals. As one of the recreation aides in the Activities Department, McKayla spends quality time with many of the Center’s residents. Employed for only a year, she feels that she has made an impact. “I truly have an appreciation for the elderly and love joking around with them,” says McKayla.
Most can agree that spending time away from family and friends for any period of time can stir up feelings of loneliness. McKayla noted, “because they gave up so much becoming residents of the Center, it’s important to spend time with them. Doing this helps build relationships and makes the time spent here more meaningful.”
Some of the “go-to” ways the employees brighten up the atmosphere include throwing parties, playing games, telling jokes, or simply sitting down and listening to a story. McKayla’s favorite activity is going on monthly field trips. These short trips, with small groups, allow the residents to experience something new and, most importantly, have fun. “You can see the happiness on their faces,” McKayla says. “The fact that they feel this way makes our day.” For residents who are without family or friends, this is just another way employees show them they have a special place in their hearts - letting them know they are cared for.
