Jefferson Health - New Jersey Nurses Receive 2020 3rd Quarter DAISY Awards for Extraordinary Care

November 20, 2020

Two Jefferson Health - New Jersey nurses — Jeong Kim, MBA, BSN, RN, PCCN, of Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital Tower 2, and Melissa Slotterback, BSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, of the Jefferson Washington Township Hospital Emergency Department — have received third-quarter 2020 DAISY Awards for extraordinary care.

Part of an international program, DAISY honorees are nominated by patients, family members, and colleagues for demonstrating excellence through clinical expertise, extraordinary compassionate care, and a high level of professionalism.

Jeong Kim, of Maple Shade, NJ, was nominated for her extraordinary care of a patient who said they have “never met anyone so comforting and compassionate … Jeong is just fantastic!” Not only did Jeong go out of her way to ensure the patient would be comfortable and able to sleep,  she also gave them a small gift of a good luck gift (a four-leaf clover pressed between two sheets of plastic), with a message wishing them continued good health in the future.

Melissa Slotterback, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, was nominated by a colleague who worked with her during her transition to the role of staff nurse in the Emergency Department. She said that “Melissa exemplifies what nursing is. She puts the patient and the patient's experience first. She looks out for their best interest, especially in the hard times of COVID-19 when families, who usually are the best patient advocates, can't be present.”

DAISY Award winners are chosen following a review of nominations by Jefferson’s Clinical Recognition Committee in New Jersey. The nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in late 1999 from complications of an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique way of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients’ families.
