Hospital:

Experience Summer Post-Bariatric Surgery

-- Marc A. Neff, MD, FACS, FASMBS

Seasonal changes can be a new challenge for postoperative weight loss surgery (bariatric) patients.

In the summertime, patients who have recently undergone weight loss surgery may notice that they don't perspire as much as they used to. In fact, they may be surprised at how much they now enjoy the heat.

Similarly, nights may be colder than they remember. It is not uncommon for a post-operative bariatric patient to get into an argument with a family member or roommate over the use of the air conditioner, which may no longer be a necessity to the patient.

Postoperative bariatric patients should be cautious with the summer months approaching, as their risk of dehydration is higher due to higher activity level. Be sure to always have your water bottle with you!
