Catherine: A Success Story

January 8, 2020

I struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. At the age of 12, I was told I was pre-diabetic and would fully develop the disease by the time I was 20 if I didn’t change my lifestyle. Because of this, I tried nearly every diet and exercise program in the book, but I saw very few results.

My amazing mother took the lead; she made the life-changing decision to have bariatric surgery. I didn’t know much about it at the time, but I saw how much it helped her. I’ll never forget how her choice to save her own life inspired me to save mine.

I was 21, a college sophomore, taking blood pressure medication and right on the edge of being diabetic, when I decided it was time to follow in my mother’s footsteps. It was a difficult change to make at such a young age, but I can’t imagine how much more difficult it would’ve been if I had waited.

I was worried about how it would affect my social life (college kids always love to eat while hanging out)! I now know that no food ever tasted as good as my new health feels. Now, down almost 150 pounds, I can easily fit into desks at school. I went to the Poconos for the first time and conquered a six hour hike! I work out in gyms without worrying about whether or not people are staring. Most importantly, I can go out with my friends and enjoy life as the new, happy, and healthy Catherine that I am getting to know more and more of each day.

I hear a lot of people say that they wish they had the surgery done earlier in life. I’m one of the lucky ones, I guess! I can’t thank Dr. Louis Balsama enough for helping me through this journey. I’m glad I had this opportunity at such a young age to get my life back.
