Brian Sweeney Named President & Chief Operating Officer of Jefferson Health’s New Jersey Division
Brian Sweeney, RN, MBA, FACHE, has been named President and Chief Operating Officer of Jefferson Health in New Jersey. A 23-year Jefferson Health veteran, Sweeney was appointed Interim President in early March, replacing the New Jersey division’s previous President, Joseph W. Devine, FACHE, who has been named Executive VP & Chief Experience Officer with the Jefferson enterprise.
Since joining the New Jersey leadership team, Sweeney managed through many operational challenges surrounding the COVID-19 crisis, as South Jersey emerged as one of the early regional hotspots for the virus. Previously, he had most recently led daily hospital operations across all Thomas Jefferson University Hospital campuses in Philadelphia as Chief Operating Officer, as well as leading the enterprise’s digestive health and transplant service lines, among other roles.
“Throughout this pandemic, Brian has demonstrated strong leadership skills, decisiveness, and operational aptitude,” said Stephanie Conners, MBA, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, Jefferson EVP and enterprise Chief Operating Officer. “In just three months, he has built strong partnerships with his leadership team, physicians and staff, and Jefferson New Jersey board members.”
A results-oriented executive who has led numerous complex change initiatives at Jefferson, Sweeney earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Gwynedd-Mercy College in 1996. Sweeney’s nursing career included emergency/trauma care and critical care transport. A resident of Gwynedd Valley, Pa., Sweeney earned his MBA from Temple University in 2000. A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, he is a national speaker on leadership, strategy, healthcare operations, and performance improvement.
